<image:caption>Off trail, mindfulness can look like pausing before you begin your day, taking three grounding breaths, taking a large drink of water or bringing awareness to moments of gratitude. These small acts reconnect us to the sense of aliveness and peace we feel outdoors.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Bringing the Trail Home: Integrating the Wild Within - Every backpacking retreat reminds us how capable we truly are. How strength can look like asking for help, resting when needed, or saying “yes” to adventure even when fear whispers “no.” That same empowerment can guide us through the quieter seasons too.</image:title>
<image:caption>Ask yourself: “What small, courageous step can I take this fall to honor my own growth?” Maybe it’s setting a boundary, trying something new, or nurturing a creative spark that’s been waiting for your attention.</image:caption>

<image:caption>You might light a candle before journaling, sip herbal tea after work, or create an evening ritual that feels supportive and sacred. The goal is to tend to your inner landscape with the same care and reverence you bring to the wilderness.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Perhaps the most magical part of every Expedition Courage experience is the sisterhood; the way women uplift one another, share vulnerability, and create a sense of belonging. As the seasons shift, we want to help you carry that connection home. Whether you’ve joined us for a full retreat, a single hike, or just one of our community calls, you’re part of our growing circle. Together, we’re building a network of women who lead with heart and walk with courage- both on and off the trail.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - You Don’t Have to Be ‘Outdoorsy’ to Go Backpacking - The wilderness doesn’t ask you for a résumé—it offers you a return. Backpacking isn't about earning your place in the wild. It’s about remembering that the wild has always been within you. It's about reconnecting with the version of you who is raw, alive, and free.</image:title>
<image:caption>The land is not a luxury. It’s not a prize or a secret or a privilege passed down through bloodlines.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - You Don’t Have to Be ‘Outdoorsy’ to Go Backpacking - Backpacking is one of the most direct, visceral ways to interrupt that pattern. Imagine standing at 10,000 feet, completely unplugged. Your phone is off. Your feet are dirty. You’re surrounded by women who get it.</image:title>
<image:caption>No masks. No small talk. Just realness, presence, and peace. That moment doesn’t require you to be “outdoorsy.” It just requires you to show up.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - You Don’t Have to Be ‘Outdoorsy’ to Go Backpacking - You don’t have to hike the Appalachian Trail. You don’t need fancy gear. You don’t need to be in peak shape. You just need to listen to the voice inside that’s been whispering: "I need something different."</image:title>

<image:caption>Now imagine this: you’re deep in the backcountry. No cell signal, no calendar alerts, no noise. Just the steady rhythm of your boots on the trail, the scent of pine, your breath, your heartbeat. You’re carrying everything you need on your back. You're tired. You’re sore. And you're completely alive.</image:caption>

<image:caption>At sea level, the air pressure is higher, and oxygen is abundant. As you gain elevation, the pressure drops, making it harder for your body to get the oxygen it needs. This can affect your energy levels and overall performance on the trail. The key to enjoying your outdoor adventure is to help your body adjust gradually to higher altitudes, ensuring that you can keep moving forward with strength and vitality.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How Your Biography Creates Your Biology - Self-criticism is learned at a very young age.</image:title>
<image:caption>This criticism stems from your upbringing and what you observed your parents (or whoever raised you) do or not do, which leaves an imprint on your programming. These imprints are stored in your subconscious mind, and as you age, they begin to surface. For example, let's say as a child you found freedom in playing outside. It was always an adventure running around barefoot, rolling around in the dirt, joyfully screaming, courageously climbing trees, and laughing endlessly.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Calming Your Nervous System While Diving Into the Unknown - This is what I call the 5-5-7 breath.</image:title>
<image:caption>You’ll inhale for 5, hold for 5 and exhale for 7. So the exhale is a bit longer than the inhale. Sit in a comfortable position, spine straight, and feet flat on the floor. Eyes can be opened or closed. Focus on relaxing and how it feels in your body. Inhale for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 filling your lungs to 2/3 capacity. Hold for 5... Exhale for 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1... As you continue this conscious breathing, steady rhythm, scan the senses. The scent of the air in your nose, the color of your eyelids, your taste buds, the feeling of your butt on the chair and your feet spread wide on the earth, the sound of my voice. Inhale...hold...and exhale. Keep breathing and scanning, tuning into a heightened awareness. Repeat 10x</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Guide to Backpacking Paria Canyon - I’m going to primarily be discussing the route I took which was entering by Whitehouse Trailhead near Kanab, UT, and exiting via Lee’s Ferry in AZ. The route is around 38 miles however it’s nearly impossible to truly say how much we hiked. It’s important to note that hiking through a river is slow, especially when water levels are high. The route goes in and out of a streambed following a winding canyon so there isn’t a specific “trail” but rather a general direction that you follow. Not to mention all the side quests to explore petroglyphs, arches, and historical artifacts.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Guide to Backpacking Paria Canyon - Consider shuttle logistics as this is a point to point thru hike. If you are going with a group you should arrange to drop one vehicle off at Lee’s Ferry and start at Whitehouse TH. If you are considering hiring a shuttle service I would still recommend leaving your vehicle at Lee’s Ferry and having the shuttle take you to Whitehouse TH. It’s much better to end at your car than have to deal with the logistics of the shuttle a few hours back to where you started.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Retreats to Unleash Your True Self - Packing everything that you need into your backpack and setting out to embrace the unknown of a wild place you’ve never been before is POWERFUL. Doing so with like-minded women who carry the same intention to heal, learn and raise their awareness is DOUBLE POWERFUL. Having two coaches facilitate vulnerability, provoke thoughtful discussion and hold empowering space is TRIPLE POWERFUL.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Retreats to Unleash Your True Self - Backpacking teaches us that the pain and suffering is a part of the journey. No one carries 30+ lbs on their back through varied terrain in the wilderness simply because the entire process is all fun. We do it because it is worth it- the pain, the struggle, the beauty and the remarkable moments of deep connection to Self and nature. The feeling of Oneness with the Universe you can only experience while sleeping under the stars pondering life itself.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Trekking in Vietnam: Summiting Mt Fansipan via Cat Cat Route - I wanted to summit this mountain for my 31st birthday. I mean what is more epic than serious Type 2 fun to rally in a new rotation around the sun. Birthdays are symbolic to me. The intention you place upon that one special day a year to celebrate yourself has meaning. So the theme of this year is all about embracing challenge with grace and grit. What better way than to summit Mt Fansipan on the hardest route.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Trekking in Vietnam: Summiting Mt Fansipan via Cat Cat Route - Straight up and no switchbacks! Our porters macheted our way through sections of overgrowth. It was a real adventure. Certain sections required us to perform technical climbing moves to get ourselves over terrain. Other sections were so steep I used my hands to crawl up the steps. We were constantly pulling off leeches from our shoes and socks. The rain and wind would come and go. But the beauty of this mountainous jungle was unlike anything I’d ever experienced before.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Trekking in Vietnam: Summiting Mt Fansipan via Cat Cat Route - When the limiting beliefs came up that sent doubt and despair into my psyche, I recognized it before those thoughts took over. Then I reframed my thinking into empowering statements like “I AM STRONG” “I WAS BUILT TO HIKE THIS HIKE” “I AM ENOUGH” “I AM A BAD BITCH” “I CAN DO HARD THINGS” “I AM THRIVING” “I AM GRATEFUL FOR MY BODY” and just like that I was powering through the difficult parts with courage, confidence and grit.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Trekking in Vietnam: Summiting Mt Fansipan via Cat Cat Route - The next morning we woke up and were served coffee, tea and a hearty noodle soup breakfast. Susu kept us well fed with huge portions that had eggs, chicken, and fresh vegetables that her and the porters foraged for on the first day of our trek. After breakfast we packed our stuff, got ready and then set out to begin a new day. By 7:30 am we were hiking to the summit of Mt Fansipan.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Trekking in Vietnam: Summiting Mt Fansipan via Cat Cat Route - This was the most beautiful and inspiring adventure and so much more special than I ever thought it could be. <image:title>Blog - Trekking in Vietnam: Summiting Mt Fansipan via Cat Cat Route - Adventure parallels life in many ways. Nothing worth having or achieving comes easy. People don’t trek up mountains with everything on their back because it’s easy or comfortable. We do it because the feeling of strength, resilience and gratitude that follows is 100% worth every step. It will feel like a game of mental gymnastics at times and you will face moments where you are wondering why you chose to do this to yourself. But the end result and reflection is EVERYTHING AND MORE.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Different Types of Backpacking Stoves - If you are just looking for the option to boil water you may consider a jetboil which is an integrative system. These stoves boil water in just 100 seconds. So if you plan to dehydrate your food or purchase freeze dried meals, this stove is all you really need. You can store your fuel canister in the Jetboil main compartment to save space in your pack.</image:title>
<image:caption>They also make canister stoves that are free standing and have their own “legs”. There will be a fuel hose that you screw on the threads of your canister. These supposedly perform better in windy conditions and are relatively lightweight but do add a few ounces more than the other options. I’ve seen a lot of these on amazon for a very affordable price.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Different Types of Backpacking Stoves - I’ve seen some resourceful hikers make an alcohol stove out of a soda can. So if you’re looking to save money and weight this could be a good option for you. Toaks also makes an alcohol stove that weighs in at just 0.7 oz. Denatured alcohol is the fuel you would use and it’s very inexpensive to buy.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Different Types of Backpacking Stoves - Solo Stove makes a lightweight wood burning stove. The benefit of this is you can use twigs, pine needles and dry leaves as your fuel which saves you weight and space in your pack. That can also present a challenge because you have to find fuel that is the right size and dry enough to burn easily.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Different Types of Backpacking Stoves - If you have an adventure planned in another country the MSR Whisperlite International is a multi-fuel stove which will take white gas, kerosene and unleaded auto gasoline. This gives you more options while planning major trips abroad where fuel options may differ.</image:title>

The recovery period was always a bummer and I developed anxiety about potential injuries on trail.</image:title>

<image:caption>What I really love about the Altra Lone Peaks is the zero drop. This mimics a barefoot stance so your heel isn’t raised at all like in a traditional running shoe. I was intrigued by this feature because I figured the more flat my foot was, the less likely I would be to roll an ankle. The toe box is also wider to support the natural spread of your toes vs traditional shoes which squish toes inward.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 5 Backpacking Trips in Colorado That Don’t Require Permits - From Gold Creek Lake, the trail starts to become steep as we begin gaining quite a bit of elevation to reach the top of the saddle at 10,400 ft. The 360 degree views from up here are absolutely incredible.</image:title>
<image:caption>From here, you will descend into one of the most beautiful basins in the region. The icy blue water is surrounded by jagged granite peaks with plenty of campsites tucked into the forest surrounding the lake.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 5 Backpacking Trips in Colorado That Don’t Require Permits - This is truly a hidden gem that I stumbled upon during a solo 2020 pandemic road trip with my dog. I went in late May and was STUNNED by the lush new growth of Aspens everywhere.</image:title>
<image:caption>The trail wasn't very maintained and there were a lot of downed trees. I recall having to be very careful about where I selected to pitch my tent to avoid standing dead trees. But WOW... it was such a unique area and as the name implies the geology very much made me feel like I was embarking upon some hidden secret castle. I saw 2 other hikers that whole trip.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 5 Backpacking Trips in Colorado That Don’t Require Permits - This is one of the best loops under 10 miles in the state. Missouri Lakes/Fancy Lakes Loop is around 8.8 miles total.</image:title>
<image:caption>It has everything you're looking for in a quick one night backpacking trip... forest, meadows, wildflowers, creeks, two mountain passes, marmots, alpine tundra, and TONS of stunning alpine lakes.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 5 Backpacking Trips in Colorado That Don’t Require Permits - I would rate this as generally moderate terrain overall but it gets more of a difficult rating because of the two mountain passes (Missouri Pass ~11,986 ft and Fancy Pass ~12,390 ft) that you have to climb. In between the passes you are hiking on top of the world in pristine Alpine Tundra. You can veer off to the west and hike to Treasure Vault lake for an additional 0.4 mile adventure.</image:title>

Yes we are known for our beautiful alpine lakes and snow capped peaks but we also have desert environment too.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - 5 Backpacking Trips in Colorado That Don’t Require Permits - This trip can be done as a ~35 mile loop going up Big Dominguez and connecting to Little Dominguez to make your way back. There is an area within both canyons to start where camping is prohibited but these boundaries are clearly indicated. One you pass those boundaries you are free to camp wherever (of course using best wilderness practices.)</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - 5 Backpacking Trips in Colorado That Don’t Require Permits - Goose Creek Trail 612 to McCurdy Trail is a 12.6 miles out and back hike. This is great for beginners that are wanting to test out their new gear and get their first overnight checked off the list. The trail is relatively easy to follow and campsites are plentiful as is water. There are lots off mosquitos in the area given the close proximity to the creek so be prepared with a head net and insect repellent!</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - How To Pack Your Backpack For Backpacking - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Accessibility Think about the items you are going to want readily available while on the trail. The last thing you want to have to do is shuffle around inside your bag to find something you really need. This will usually throw off the perfectly packed game of Tetris you intentionally created before you started hiking. Items such as a first-aid kit, map, compass, GPS, sunscreen, chapstick, snacks and rain protection are the most important to have accessible. Utilize your zipper pockets for the small stuff and have your rain gear at the very top of your packed bag. Balance So this is all about proper gear placement and weight distribution. Your spinal health will thank you for giving this a mindful consideration while organizing your pack. On the very bottom of your bag you should have your sleeping bag. If you're using a hydration pack such as a Camelbak make sure you put that in the hydration sleeve first. Heavier items should be placed in the middle, so right above the hips, between your shoulder blades and closest to your back. This is the ideal zone for your bear canister along with your tent and clothes which can be stuffed around filling in all of those extra empty spaces. Stuffing clothes around your bear can also helps to keep it centered in the middle of your back. If you put the heaviest stuff on top you will be off balance and your shoulders will become really sore. After that you can put bulkier items like your stove/pot on top. Last but not least- your rain gear or easy to grab layers just in case. Compression Most bags have straps on the outside of the pack that you can tighten which will help the packs overall integrity and longevity. It's a good idea to also invest in a compression sack to stuff your sleeping bag in. This will lessen the bulk by about 4x and will allow you to fit more in your pack. Dry What I love about backpacks nowadays is they usually come with a fitted rain cover which is easily accessible and can be thrown on top in no time to keep your stuff protected from rain. However, if you know you're going to be dealing with wet conditions don't JUST rely on your rain cover. Before you even pack anything inside, line your pack with a heavy duty trash bag. This is a pro tip and all my fellow outdoor professionals know what's up. Everything Inside Finally keep everything inside. You don't want to look like a Christmas tree on the trail with a bunch of random items hanging off carabiners swinging around. The ONLY thing I allow to be secured to the outside of my pack is trekking poles which can be secured with one on each side for proper weight distribution. Oh and my pee rag (ladies, I'll talk about this in a post coming soon.) The point is, if you absolutely HAVE to utilize the outside of your pack for items- you need to make sure it's secure and stable as well as distributed equally.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How To Layer For Outdoor Winter Activities - Synthetic fabric such as polyester, nylon, rayon, and polypropylene are great options as well because they are so affordable. However, they do hold odor so if you're going on a multi-day excursion it's a good idea to invest in a quality merino wool base system. I've had my Smartwool base layers for 4 years now and they still look brand new. I make sure not to dry them to avoid any shrinkage.</image:title>

They consist of a thinner material that acts as a second skin underneath your more insualting glove/mitten, socks, and hat. So if you're someone who has trouble with cold feet, consider investing in a high quality liner. They also really help with preventing blisters!</image:caption>
